After a while, the laptop started function weird, then I restarted the computer, after that there all the time showed that it was running in safe mode.It could not boot up windows and when it was about to run in windows it shows as blue screen with auto restart.
I was so worried then I eagerly took it to service center, the time reached there was around 12 am, but have to wait till 2 pm to reach my queue for the computer check up. The mechanics told me to come for pick up around 3 pm.
The computer’s Hard Drive was damaged as well as the index drive c, and also the half of bad sector.
The mechanics did change the new Hard Drive for my computer, and the good (in bad) news is it’s free.
He even showed the old Hard Drive to see of how severe it was damaged.

Make Partition for Virtual Memory and Scratch disk

Create at least 10 GB partition for scratch disk use only and create folder name “temp” (D:\Temp for an example)

Go to Control Panel-> system -> advance -> performance setting -> advance -> virtual memory change

Select drive C
Select no paging file
Press set

Select drive D
Select custom size
Input both min and max = 4096
Press set

Press OK

Do not restart at this step

Close all windows to system properties, tab advance

Click environmental variable
Double click both “temp” and “tmp”
Change both value to d:\temp
Then click OK to save

Restart the computer

When computer restarts:

Go to D:\Temp

Delete every files that have extension “tmp” especially the file “Photoshop Temp”

Delete the files in folder Temp every time you start the computer.

Do not use this partition to store any data. You can format this drive at anytime.

Please note that if you’re no longer use the computer:

Close Adobe Photoshop every time.

Use Windows Shut down instead of Hibernation or Standby. These features can cause more serious problems on you hard drive.

Few days later after I regenerate my hard drive, I working on Adobe Photoshop again and leave the program open overnight. Next morning I wake up and saw my computer restarting. I though it was an error again but would be fine after restart. So, I go to bath room. 20 minutes later come back to continue my work. The computer is still restarting. This makes me wondered. I sit down and take a look. It restarts then trying to load Windows then the blue screen flash and it restart again.


I run HDD Regeneration again to heal the bad sector on my hard drive and start searching on the internet why my hard drive has bad sectors which I never have before.

I finally found the answer. It was memory fragmentation. One of the big windows problem since Windows95!! The system cannot manage the storage space for its usage efficiently. Adobe Photoshop uses scratch disk (Virtual Memory –like system) to reach the highest performance. It required at least 1GB free on hard drive space. The normal setting of the scratch disk is set to C:\ which is a system drive. When the program is opened, it continually consumes the space of hard drive until there is no more. My understanding, Adobe Photoshop still request the space for the scratch disk even it is no more. The system is trying to find the space on every sectors of hard drive. I think this is the caused of the bad sectors on my hard drive.

I tried to proof the cause if the errors and my assumption by leaving the computer opened with Adobe Photoshop again. Just like what I think! The same error occurs.

Now I can conclude the caused of the problem that it is the scratch disk system. I also have the suggestions from the graphic experts to manage the scratch disk.

One day, I worked on Adobe Photoshop CS in Windows XP from day to night. I was doing some pictures retouching. The computer became slows and finally stop working. I cannot do anything even calls up the task manager or Dr. Watson o fix the programs.

Desperately, I press the power button to force the system to shut down.

After rebooting the computer, I found that my computer cannot start windows. It only flash the blue screen which is so fast and I cannot even see the error message and the computer restarts by itself.

Firstly, I though Windows was error due to the incorrect shut down method. So, I put the Windows XP cd and try to repair windows. Windows XP CD shows up the list of hard drive but it can only found D:\ and E:\ but cannot find my C:\. I removed the Windows XP CD and start to think what happened to my hard drive

I grab my bootable CD which contains some portable OS and put it in my cd drive. I tried portable windows XP, portable windows 98 and some DOS File manager programs. Unfortunately, none of them can access C:\ on my hard drive. This time I though this error can caused by Hard drive bad sector.

I find the others boot cd and found one that contains the program HDD Regenerator 1.51. I never used this program before but it sounds like this program can resurrect my hard drive. The program is very complicate and hard to use. I boot the computer with this cd and the program will ask which sector you want to start the scanning. I entered “0” and press enter. The program starts. It scan every megabytes on the hard drive. No matter how many partition it is this program can see only the physical hard drive.

The program screen shows the megabytes that has been scanned number of bad sectors and number of recovered bad sectors.
It took one night to scan. In the morning I found the complete screen and press few buttons to exit the program and try restart again.
The Windows starts completely and I can continue my work on the next day but there is one thing I didn’t realize on that time is how the bad sectors occur on my hard drive. I finally found the answer on couple days later that it caused by Adobe Photoshop.
